ALCOHOL AND THE HEART

Drinking too much alcohol can raise blood pressure, disturb heart rhythm and cause weight gain, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. It can also weaken the heart muscle over time. If you have already experienced a heart problem, reducing your intake may support recovery and make it easier to follow medical advice.

Keeping track of what you drink, including measures poured at home, is a useful first step. Aim to remain within recommended weekly limits and include several alcohol-free days. The NHS, British Heart Foundation and Drinkaware links offer information, tools and support to make lasting changes.
