Ear Checks

An ear examination when you have concerns about wax, blocked ears or general ear health.

About this service

If you're experiencing blocked ears, reduced hearing, discomfort or suspect a build-up of earwax, a professional ear examination can help identify what may be causing the problem.

At Earworx, we examine your ears using specialist equipment, explain what we can see and advise on the most appropriate next steps.

An ear check does not automatically mean you need earwax removal. If wax is present, we'll assess whether treatment may be appropriate. If we identify something requiring further medical investigation, we'll explain our findings and recommend appropriate medical advice.

Do you need earwax removal?

An ear check can help determine whether a build-up of earwax is present and whether removal may be appropriate.

If microsuction is recommended, we'll explain how the treatment works, what it involves and the options available.

You can find further information about the procedure, preparation and charges on our Earwax Removal (Microsuction) page .

Hearing tests and hearing aids

Earworx also offers free hearing tests with our visiting audiologist on Mondays, subject to availability.

Where appropriate, our visiting audiologist can advise on hearing aids and discuss suitable options, including hearing aid provision where required.

A hearing test is different from an ear examination. An ear check looks for visible problems within the ear, while a hearing test assesses your hearing ability.

  • Clear findings and advice – We explain whether earwax is present, discuss any concerns and recommend appropriate next steps.
  • Microsuction or referral advice – If earwax removal may be appropriate, we'll explain the separate microsuction service. Where necessary, we'll recommend further medical assessment.

Questions about ear checks

We ask about your symptoms and examine your ear canals and eardrums using specialist equipment. We explain what we can see and whether earwax treatment or further medical advice may be appropriate.
No. An ear check looks for visible ear-health concerns, including wax. A hearing test assesses hearing ability. Earworx advertises separate free hearing tests with a visiting audiologist on Mondays, subject to availability; please confirm when booking.
Not automatically. If wax is present, we will explain whether removal may help and discuss the separate microsuction service. Sometimes no removal is needed.
You do not usually need special preparation for an examination. Bring details of any ear symptoms, previous ear surgery, hearing aids or ear drops you use. If you have pain, discharge or a suspected infection, mention this when booking.
The website currently lists an ear check consultation at £10. Earwax removal is charged separately. Please confirm the current price and any additional charges with Earworx before your appointment.
Yes. Our visiting audiologist offers free hearing tests on Mondays, subject to appointment availability. Following your test, she can explain the results, offer professional advice about your hearing and, where appropriate, discuss suitable hearing aids and arrange their supply. Please contact Earworx to book your hearing test in advance.
Do not wait for a routine ear check if your hearing has suddenly deteriorated, particularly within the last 30 days; seek urgent medical assessment. Severe dizziness, new facial weakness or other sudden neurological symptoms also need urgent medical attention.
