Earwax Removal

Earwax removal including microsuction, following an ear assessment.

About this service

A build-up of earwax can cause blocked ears, reduced hearing, discomfort and sometimes ringing or buzzing in the ears. If troublesome earwax is affecting your everyday life, Earworx offers professional assessment and microsuction earwax removal tailored to your individual needs.

We aim to make every appointment comfortable and reassuring, taking time to examine your ears, explain our findings and discuss the most appropriate treatment.

The difference is our clinical experience

Professional ear care involves more than simply removing wax. Some patients have deeply impacted earwax, narrow ear canals or other ear-health conditions that require particular care and clinical judgement.

Cheryl's nursing background and clinical experience bring valuable knowledge to the assessment and treatment of patients, including those with more complex earwax problems.

Our approach prioritises careful examination, appropriate treatment, patient comfort and safety. We also welcome enquiries and referrals from other providers where additional clinical assessment may be helpful.

How microsuction works

Microsuction is a method of earwax removal that uses a small, controlled suction device to remove wax from the ear canal under direct observation.

Unlike traditional ear irrigation, which uses water to flush the ear canal, microsuction does not introduce water into the ear.

It may be suitable for some patients for whom irrigation is not recommended. However, microsuction is not appropriate for everyone. We assess each person's circumstances, explain the procedure and discuss any relevant risks before treatment.

Do you need earwax removal?

Some people are more prone to earwax build-up, particularly those with narrow ear canals or who regularly use hearing aids or ear protection.

Not every blocked ear is caused by earwax. If you are unsure whether removal is necessary, we recommend arranging an initial examination.

What to expect

  • Professional ear assessment – We begin by examining your ears, discussing any symptoms and checking whether earwax removal is necessary and clinically suitable. We explain our findings before recommending treatment.
  • Preparation where appropriate – Some patients may benefit from using earwax-softening drops or sprays before treatment. We provide advice based on your individual circumstances, as these preparations are not suitable for everyone.
  • Careful microsuction treatment – Where appropriate, earwax is removed using specialist suction equipment under direct observation. We explain the procedure, discuss relevant risks and obtain your consent before proceeding.
  • Aftercare and practical advice – Following treatment, we explain the outcome and provide advice on caring for your ears. If further treatment or medical assessment is needed, we discuss the appropriate next steps.
  • Clear prices and appointments – Earwax removal costs £50 for one ear or £70 for both ears. Special offers may be available. We confirm applicable charges and appointment arrangements before treatment.

Treatment depends on individual clinical assessment and suitability. Please confirm current prices, preparation instructions and appointment availability with Earworx.

Questions about earwax removal

A blocked feeling, reduced hearing or discomfort can have several causes. We first examine your ears to see whether troublesome wax is present and whether removal is appropriate. An ear check may be all you need.
The practitioner examines your ear and uses a small suction device to remove wax under direct observation. You may notice noise or a pulling sensation. Tell us immediately if you feel pain or dizziness; treatment can be paused or stopped.
Some wax benefits from softening beforehand, but drops are not suitable for everyone. Ask us or your pharmacist what is appropriate, especially if you have had a perforated eardrum, ear surgery, discharge or an ear infection. Do not put drops into an ear with a known perforated eardrum unless a clinician has advised you to.
Sometimes wax is too hard, or the ear examination shows that removal would not be suitable. We will explain the findings and discuss preparation, a further appointment or medical assessment as appropriate. Please check our charging arrangements when booking.
The prices currently shown are £50 for one ear and £70 for both ears. Treatment depends on a clinical assessment. Please confirm the current charge, any separate examination fee and the policy if removal cannot be completed when you book.
Clinic appointments are available in Hull, and home or care-home visits may be arranged subject to availability and individual requirements. Contact Earworx on 07935 392965 to discuss the location, suitability and any visit charges.
