Professional microsuction earwax removal at Earworx

From the archive · 12 February 2025

This archive article was first published by Earworx in February 2025. Earwax is a normal protective substance, but sometimes it builds up and blocks the ear canal. When this happens, hearing may sound muffled and an ear can feel full or uncomfortable.

Blocked wax may also be associated with itching or ringing sounds. These symptoms are not unique to earwax, however, and should not automatically be attributed to a blockage. A suitable ear examination can establish whether wax is present.

What should you avoid?

Avoid putting cotton buds or other objects into the ear canal, as they can push wax further in or damage the skin. Wax-softening drops may sometimes be appropriate, but not for everyone—particularly if you have had ear surgery, a perforated eardrum or discharge.

If pain, discharge, rapidly worsening hearing or dizziness occurs, seek clinical advice rather than relying on self-treatment. Earworx can examine your ears and discuss microsuction when it is suitable.
