This article revisits a topic Cheryl Lawton wrote about for Earworx in March 2022. Tinnitus can feel different for different people; some describe ringing, while others hear buzzing, hissing or humming.
Five useful starting points
- Understand what you are hearing: tinnitus is a symptom, not a diagnosis by itself.
- Discuss persistent symptoms with an appropriate health professional; look for any treatable ear condition.
- Consider a hearing assessment when hearing loss may be contributing.
- Manage the effect on stress, sleep and concentration with suitable support and routines.
- Remember that there is no universal cure, but evidence-based approaches can help you manage the impact.
Sound enrichment, tinnitus counselling and approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy can make symptoms less intrusive for some people. Complementary relaxation may help wellbeing but should not be presented as a cure or substitute for appropriate medical care.
If tinnitus beats in time with your pulse, ask for urgent medical advice. Sudden hearing loss or neurological symptoms alongside tinnitus need emergency assessment.
