Why an ear check is worth having

Blocked ears, reduced hearing and discomfort are not always caused by wax. An ear check helps you understand what may be happening.

Our ears work hard every day, but it can be easy to overlook gradual changes. You may notice a blocked sensation, muffled conversations, itching or a feeling that one ear is different from the other. An ear check is a simple way to look for visible concerns and discuss the right next step.

An ear check is not automatically earwax removal

An ear-health practitioner examines the ear canal and the eardrum using suitable equipment. Sometimes there is troublesome earwax. At other times the ear canal is clear, meaning that wax removal is unlikely to solve the problem. That distinction matters: treatment should follow an assessment, rather than an assumption.

What might prompt an appointment?

  • A persistent blocked feeling or change in how well you hear ordinary conversation.
  • Concerns about repeated earwax build-up or hearing-aid comfort.
  • Itching or discomfort that you would like assessed.
  • A desire to check your ears before seeking a separate hearing test.

Not everyone needs frequent ear examinations. The value is in getting checked when symptoms, individual circumstances or professional advice indicate a reason. Earwax itself is normal and helps protect the ear canal; removing it unnecessarily can cause irritation.

What happens if the examination is normal?

A normal-looking ear does not prove that hearing is normal. If you have ongoing difficulty hearing, a hearing test may be needed. Earworx has a visiting audiologist who provides free hearing tests on Mondays by appointment, subject to availability, and can advise about hearing aids where appropriate.

Do not delay urgent care

If hearing suddenly deteriorates in one or both ears, or becomes worse over days or weeks, contact your GP or NHS 111 urgently. Hearing loss with discharge, significant earache or severe dizziness also needs prompt medical advice. Do not wait for a routine ear-check appointment in those circumstances.

Practical, straightforward advice in Hull

At Earworx, the approach begins with listening to your concerns and examining the ears. If wax is present, suitable treatment can be discussed. If another assessment is more appropriate, the team can explain the limits of an ear check and point you towards medical or audiological support.
